PHOTOS: When patriotism and sports collide
Kaepernick hasn’t been in the lineup this season, but he’s definitely been in the spotlight after deciding to kneel instead of stand during the “Star-Spangled Banner” to protest police brutality and shooting against unarmed minorities.
That controversial decision earned him comparisons to the late boxing legend, who lost his heavyweight title and faced jail time for refusing to fight in the Vietnam War during the late 1960s.
As for Kaepernick, his decision has earned him many more critics, like the fans who booed him heavily when he came on to New Era Field on Sunday.
After all the debate and discussion, though, Kaepernick finally gets a chance to show if he’s the same caliber of quarterback who helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in 2012. After all, Ali wouldn’t be nearly as revered as he was if he wasn’t a great boxer.
Kaepernick got off to a good start Sunday, leading the 49ers to a scoring drive to take a 3-0 lead on their second possession.
