Reeves confirmed to the relief of many that The Batman 2 is still on the way (though not necessarily with that title). But fans were understandably curious whether current rather drastic changes at Warner Bros. Discovery would affect Farrell’s Penguin show. Luckily, the director was quick to alleviate any concerns regarding the miniseries. He even went a step further to clarify that it may be required viewing for The Batman sequel.

During an interview with Collider, where Reeves confirmed that The Batman 2 is safe among Warner Bros. Discovery’s restructuring, he also offered a juicy little tease regarding Farrell’s project. “We are very, very soon going to start shooting The Penguin with Colin. That is super exciting,” Reeves said. “There’s actually a whole little fabric of things we’re wanting to do, the way we’re doing with Penguin and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be.”

Not only that but there may be more supplemental projects in the works that will help flesh out the grungy Gotham City of The Batman. “There are some other things we have planned too,” Reeves added. “The BatVerse of what we’re doing has me very, very excited, and I’m very passionate about it. So I’m excited.” He’s likely referring to, among others, the recently announced Arkham Asylum spinoff series. But chances are there could be other projects in the pipeline as well.

The idea that The Penguin will serve as a bit of a setup for the sequel to The Batman is intriguing. The 2022 film wowed audiences in several ways. From the incredible performances from stars like Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz to the gorgeous use of The Volume tech by the cinematographers, there are plenty of reasons to be excited for more stories set in that rich, dark world.

Here’s hoping The Penguin, or whatever it ends up being called, continues that trend of on-screen excellence. Farrell has already more than proven himself with his incredible performance as the character, so just the idea of seeing more of him in a miniseries sounds too good to pass up.

The Batman is available to stream on HBO Max.
